HELP FURLOUGHED EMPLOYEES KEEP BENEFITS: SPECIAL MEASURES FOR CONTINUATION AND REINSTATEMENT

We have several special measures in place to help employees impacted by COVID-19 to continue or keep the benefits they had. Keeping benefits is critical for employees and their financial security, and we are asking for your partnership in helping to make sure that employees understand their options. Highlights of our program include:

  • An easy option for employers to continue benefits at pre-COVID-19 levels for 90 days (ending September 1, 2020)
  • Special measures to ensure that employees who are reinstated within one year may reinstate at their pre-COVID-19 benefit levels without evidence of insurability and, in most cases, without a preexisting condition review

EASIER PORTABILITY & CONVERSION PROCESSES

We believe that the benefits you chose for your employees close important coverage gaps in their financial security. If Continuation is no longer an option, and you are facing challenging decisions about your employees’ livelihoods, we’ve made it easier for you to communicate with impacted employees about their benefits, and easier for them to arrange other coverage options.

  • You can use this email template and flyer to communicate portability, conversion and COBRA options to your employees. As noted in the communication, employees can call us directly for next steps.
  • Important:  To ease an administrative burden, during the Covid-19 crisis, we are not requiring employers to complete our Portability and Conversion Notice. This email template will serve as the Notice; however, we may need to confirm some employee coverage information with you later in the application process.  
  • Reminder: Dental and vision coverage is available for continuation under COBRA.

PREMIUM CALCULATION FOR PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM LOANS

The federal Paycheck Protection Program that provides loans for businesses with under 500 employees has received additional funding. If you are considering applying for this loan, which may be forgivable, we can provide copies of your premium bills to support the loan application. Call your Sun Life representative or Client Services Support at 800-247-6875 for assistance. We would like to help you keep people employed longer, with their benefits intact.

NEW CRITICAL ILLNESS COVID-19 BENEFIT

We want to make sure covered employees have help with out-of-pocket medical costs should they face a serious COVID-19 diagnosis which requires critical care. We have added our COVID-19 Critical benefit, which pays 100% of the elected benefit amount, to all existing Critical Illness plans when the policy includes Major Organ Failure as a covered condition. The benefit is effective the later of March 13, 2020 or the policy effective date. There is no impact to inforce rates for this benefit.

NEW YORK DBL/PFL QUARANTINE ORDER BENEFITS

If Sun Life administers your New York DBL/PFL benefits, and your business has fewer than 100 employees in total (nationally, by FEIN), your employees who cannot work due to an individualized quarantine order may be eligible for the New York DBL/PFL Quarantine Order benefits after having used their paid sick days under the new law. Furthermore, for employers of all sizes, employees who cannot work due to their minor child being under an individualized quarantine order may be eligible for the New York PFL Quarantine Order benefits. GRACE PERIOD FOR NEW YORK DBL/PFL

If you have New York DBL and PFL coverage with us, please know that the State of New York has mandated a 60-day premium grace period effective March 30, 2020 for employers facing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Should you need it, there is no need to contact us as it will be applied automatically.

ACCESS TO TELEDENTISTRY SERVICES

Covered employees should first seek treatment from their primary dentist. If someone’s primary dentist is not available for immediate help, employees can now call on Sun Life for assistance in locating a dentist providing teledentistry evaluations. To seek this assistance, those covered should call Sun Life at 888-811-1240. This information, including the toll-free number for assistance, is outlined in our What is teledentistry flyer that can be shared with covered employees.

Sun Life’s dental plans cover teledentistry evaluations as we would an in-office evaluation. Evaluations are subject to the same policy provisions, copayments and frequencies as an office visit.  There is nothing a covered member needs to do. The provider will simply code the service as being provided through teledentistry.

FOR SUN LIFE CLIENTS WITH INSURED VISION PLANS

Employees covered by a Sun Life Vision plan can now access essential medical eye care services should they have an emergent eye care need. Please share this new flyer, which outlines services included, with covered employees. If unable to reach a VSP® network doctor for an appointment, employees can call on Customer Care at 800-877-7195 for assistance in locating an eye doctor who is currently open.

If in need of new glasses or contacts, covered employees can easily use their Vision benefits without having to leave home*. Through Eyeconic, members can shop, virtually try-on and even purchase new glasses and contacts* using their Vision benefits—without taking a step outside.  Pass along this Eyeconic information—employees will thank you!
